Fuel efficiency is measured differently around the world. Here's how to convert between the common systems:

Common Conversions

  • Miles per gallon (US) to liters per 100 kilometers: 235.215 ÷ MPG = L/100km
  • Liters per 100 kilometers to miles per gallon (US): 235.215 ÷ L/100km = MPG
  • Miles per gallon (US) to miles per gallon (UK): MPG (US) × 1.201 = MPG (UK)
  • Miles per gallon (UK) to miles per gallon (US): MPG (UK) × 0.833 = MPG (US)

Examples

  • 30 MPG (US) = 235.215 ÷ 30 = 7.84 L/100km
  • 8 L/100km = 235.215 ÷ 8 = 29.4 MPG (US)

Regional Standards

  • United States: Miles per gallon (MPG)
  • Europe, Australia, and most of the world: Liters per 100 kilometers (L/100km)
  • United Kingdom: Miles per gallon (MPG), but using the imperial gallon
  • Japan: Kilometers per liter (km/L)

Remember that lower values are better for L/100km, while higher values are better for MPG.
